We (IT) monitor two EMC SANs for performance and capacity. One is production, the other is remote office production and DR. SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) gives us a historical view of capacity and latency, with the ability to alert on metrics, including customizing alerts. All alert management is centralized in the Orion interface so there's no separate alert management for SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM).
  • LUN-level capacity use
  • LUN-level performance data
  • Capacity forecast for each LUN
  • Most of the metrics are fairly high level
  • No visibility into virtual disks (you need Virtualization Monitor for that)
  • Not much granularity in hardware health
SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) is pretty good at forecasting capacity consumption, which was a must for us. If you have LUNs that have high latency in a normal environment (user shares, for instance), you'll need to customize the alerts to tune out the noise. As with all SW modules and most other products, there is a time lag between what is in the console and what's happening now. Data in the console and alerts are typically 5 to 15 minutes old.
  • Visibility into capacity consumption for forecasting budget
  • Visibility into apps or VMs that negatively affect performance (with some work)
  • We still rely on the SAN-native phone-home functions for hardware alerts like failed drives
EMC has a free monitoring and reporting package for VNV that's good at disk-level performance in near real time (heat map). For everything else, we look at SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM).

This is only being used by our IT Department. We use it to monitor our storage for performance issues as well as plan ahead for expansion. It helps us find out if certain systems need to be moved to faster storage arrays.
  • Easy to use interface.
  • Easy to set up.
  • Integrates with our other Solarwinds products.
  • Works with a lot of different storage arrays.
  • I have not found any cons of this product
It is well suited for our medium-sized environment where we have different storage arrays some have better performance than others. I can't imagine that it would be needed with a small environment where you only have 1 storage array or are not monitoring performance of the servers on different arrays.
  • We are able to plan ahead for storage expansion. This allows us to decide what we need and hold out for special discounts instead of needing to purchase right away.
  • We are able to move our systems to faster storage if they need it. This keeps systems the most productive
Didn't evaluate other products as this easily integrates with our Solarwinds System that was already in place so we did not have to have more than one monitoring system

IT System Administrator, IT Supervisor, and IT manager use this product to plan for expansion and monitor the storage for issues

No formal training just knowledge of storage and you can ask for assistance on their support page
  • Monitor Storage for issues
  • Plan for expansion
  • Move systems to faster storage if needed
  • Set up alerts to send us notifications when there are storage issues
  • Stay ahead of needed storage expansion
It has helped me prove that we need more storage as well as faster storage to management

We have so many other products of Solarwinds that it just made sense to get a system that will integrate with our other monitoring systems
I would not do anything different.
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was minimal
We did a maintenance window for the installation like we normally do so little down time on systems (I.E solarwinds web interface) while it was being setup. No issues setting up
  • There were no issues during setup
Easy to use set up wizard went off without a hitch.
No
Support is included in the renewal and purchase costs
Do not have to contact support for issues often and when i do it is fast to get response and resolve my issues

  • Install was easy
  • Set up to monitor storage was easy
  • There is nothing that i can think of that is difficult in this product
No
Easy to set up and start. Out of the box alerts which you can tweak to your needs. Easy to use interfaces as well

SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor allows us to see at a glance all of the metrics that are available on our storage devices. Without this tool we would either have to connect to the CLI and look for specific things or build scripts and custom dashboards on our own. This makes monitoring and reviewing much easier.
  • Asset inventory for storage
  • Predicting the future usage
  • Performance metrics
  • Revealing the internal statistics such as temperatures and hardware condition
  • The list of devices covers the most popular, but adding more types of devices is always helpful
  • Device types make it difficult to connect some times (on the vendor side) but the product does a good job, configuration could be easier for setting up devices.
If you have rare, very old or very uncommon devices you may need to look elsewhere, but if you are using current tech then this product probably supports your devices.
  • With SRM we have proactively monitored devices to stay ahead of data growth
  • SRM makes monitoring of internal asset condition much easier
  • SRM make monitoring of live statistics much easier.
We have a full suite of SolarWinds products and did not evaluate other options for a full package. For selective monitoring we log into the devices, but this has made that much easier as we have a dashboard rather than logging into devices one at a time.

We use the SolarWinds virtualization suite and storage resource manager for monitoring our environment. It is currently used by our managed services to monitor, create, troubleshoot, and assign tickets. It is also used by our network team to monitor endpoints. It is a great monitoring tool and statistical basis for our troubleshooting and engineering teams to get involved with problems as seen across the environment.
  • The SolarwWinds Storage Resource Monitor does good reporting and alerting to an issue. Our service center which has live monitoring uses the tool for real-time monitoring of events. It then creates tickets to action various alarms.
  • Real-time size monitoring of especially thin storage is always necessary to any thin VMware environment.
  • Great historical graph representations of storage related events. Ability to create performance graphs and monitor changes.
  • Currently there is no support for XtremIO storage. So we have to monitor that separately.
  • It could provide proactive measures to fix any Storage or SIOC related bottlenecks in the environment.
The software is great for historical trending data and realtime alerting. It lacks proactive recommendations to make corrective actions in the environments that it monitors.
  • Real-time monitoring and alerting to surpass those of native vSphere and in some occasions, better than manufacturer written software.
  • Historical monitoring of environment with charts and graphs to assist with ever changing environment loads.
Solarwinds storage resource monitor tracks space issues as related to storage. It is good for historical troubleshooting or real-time troubleshooting. We have selected Turbonomics for proactive alerting and recommendations in the environment. We use both tools for monitoring. And ultimately Turbonomics, allows us to consolidate our environment from a compute as well as a storage perspective.
